“It was fun watching the applecart being upset,” Schrader said, “but now where do we go for apples?” Paul Schrader is an enthusiastic fan of Paula Kael. Kael was the New York Times influential movie reviewer who cheered the arrival of “new Hollywood”, using shock and violence to drive a story forward. What they liked was transgression. Unfortunately, to transgress, you need a standard to transgress against.
Rolling down a hill is fun: but you can only go down if you have first pedaled to the top (or, more likely, someone has pushed you to the top.)
Update: Lileks in his entertaining way laments the decay of pop culture.
