Matthew Yglesias is on to something. He rightly shows that we have some backwards ideas about the economics of home ownership and what is good for society. Sadly, when most of the voters are home owners, there is democratic pressure to make policies that make most people poorer, especially the young and the poor. Megan McArdle says something similar happens when most people are renters.
How about we accept that government interference to help people with housing is never likely to work out well.
